Coast Guard rescues distressed mariner

CHARLESTON, S.C. — The Coast Guard rescued a man whose vessel was sinking Saturday at the entrance to the North Edisto River near Kiawah Island, South Carolina.

Watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector Charleston command center were notified by Sea Tow Charleston personnel of a 31-foot Sea Ray vessel that had run aground and was sinking.

A helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Facility Charleston responded and hoisted the man, who suffered minor injuries. He was taken to Medical University of South Carolina. After hoisting the individual, the vessel sank and capsized.

A crew aboard a 29-foot special purpose boat from Coast Guard Station Charleston was also on scene and is monitoring for potential pollution in the vicinity of the sinking.
