Coast Guard rescues boater after boat nearly capsizes off Florida Keys

KEY WEST, Fla. — A Coast Guard boatcrew from Station Marathon, Fla., rescued Tony Jaroszewski, 80, of Alden, N.Y., Sunday after Jaroszewski’s boat nearly capsized six miles south of Long Key, Fla.

Coast Guard search-and-rescue watchstanders at Sector Key West received a call at approximately 12:20 p.m. from Jaroszewski stating that he had taken a wave over his bow while at anchor and nearly capsized. Jaroszewski stated that he had already donned his life jacket in case the boat was to capsize all the way.

The Coast Guard responded immediately by issuing an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast, diverting two boatcrews from Station Islamorada, Fla., launching a boatcrew from Station Marathon and launching a MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrew. A boatcrew from Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission also responded.

The Station Marathon boatcrew arrived on scene at approximately 2 p.m. and was able get Jaroszewski safely aboard their vessel. Jaroszewski had no medical concerns and arranged for commercial salvage to recover his vessel.
