Coast Guard rescues and repatriates 105 Haitian migrants

MIAMI – The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Decisive repatriated 105 Haitian migrants to Cap Haitien, Haiti, Tuesday, after they were located at sea on a grossly overloaded vessel Monday.

While conducting a routine patrol in the Caribbean Sea, the crew of the Decisive discovered a Haitian sail freighter north of Cuba, in international waters. Decisive crewmembers distributed life jackets to the migrants and safely transferred the 77 men, 20 women and eight children to the cutter.

To date in fiscal year 2010, which began Oct. 1, 2009, the Coast Guard has interdicted 555 Haitian migrants.

Once aboard the cutters, all migrants receive food, water, shelter and basic medical care.

The Decisive is a 210-foot medium endurance cutter homeported in Pascagoula, Miss.
