CLEVELAND — A Coast Guard rescue aircrew medically evacuated a park ranger reportedly showing signs of a heart attack from South Manitou Island, Mich., Tuesday afternoon.
A search-and-rescue controller at Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan, in Milwaukee, received a report from Leelanau Township 911 emergency dispatch at 1:26 p.m. CDT regarding a park ranger suffering from signs of a heart attack on South Manitou Island in Lake Michigan 16 miles west of Leland, Mich.
An aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City, Mich., launched aboard an MH-65C Dolphin rescue helicopter.
The aircrew picked up the man from South Manitou Island and safely transported him to the air station where emergency medical services took him to Munson Medical Hospital in Traverse City.
The man was reported in stable condition.
“Though the Coast Guard would provide the same level of support and response to anyone in need, we were happy to help out a member of a partner agency,” said Capt. Matthew Sibley, commander of Sector Lake Michigan.
“The Coast Guard and park services have a great working relationship — especially important in remote areas of Michigan.”
