CLEVELAND — The Coast Guard rescued nine people late Saturday morning from a boat taking on water in Lake St. Clair.
At 11:43 a.m., a watchstander at Coast Guard Station St. Clair Shores, Mich., received a report of a disabled boat, in the vicinity of Middle Channel, in need of assistance. A rescue boatcrew, aboard a 33-foot Special Purpose Craft – Law Enforcement, launched to assist the distressed boaters.
Before the rescue boatcrew arrived on scene, TowBoat U.S. and a good Samaritan assisted the boaters, whose disabled boat was also taking on water. Once on scene, the Coast Guard boatcrew transferred the nine boaters onto the 33-foot SPC-LE.
The Coast Guard transported the nine boaters to Clinton River Boat Ramp in Harrison, Mich., and TowBoat U.S. towed the disabled vessel to the same boat ramp.
No injuries were reported.
“It was great to see fellow boaters come to the aid of another boater, one boater called the Coast Guard and another assisted them on location,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Richard Luedtke, coxswain of the 33-foot SPC-LE. “Boaters have the responsibility to watch after one another and often times can assist a distressed boater faster than we can.”
