Coast Guard rescues 6 after vessel sinks near Perdido Beach

8th Coast Guard District NewsMOBILE, Ala. — A Coast Guard small boat crew rescued five adults and a 13-year-old boy from the water after their 32-foot vessel sank eight miles south of Perdido Beach, Sunday.

Coast Guard Sector Mobile watchstanders received a mayday from the owner of the vessel, reporting that the vessel was sinking at 1:15 p.m.

Sector Mobile launched the Coast Guard Cutter Bonito and a 45-foot Response Boat – Medium from Coast Guard Station Pensacola. Alabama Marine Resources and Florida Fish and Wildlife were also notified and launched assets.

The small boat crew from Station Pensacola was first on scene and was alerted of the position by a maritime distress flare shot by one of the persons in the water. All six people were in lifejackets and were quickly recovered by the Coast Guard boat crew. They were transported to Station Pensacola.

“When the maritime public uses radios, flares, lifejackets, and other safety equipment, the Coast Guard is able to respond swiftly to rescue them,” Petty Officer 1st Class Hillary Herbst, Sector Mobile watchstander.
