SAN FRANCISCO — The Coast Guard rescued a kayaker in distress near the Monterey Bay Aquarium Friday afternoon.
Coast Guard Station Monterey received a report at approximately 2:30 p.m., that a 56-year-old woman was in distress after she fell in the water and became separated from her kayak.
Coast Guard Sector San Francisco watchstanders dispatched a Coast Guard Station Monterey 47-Motor Lifeboat crew to assist.
The woman, who was dressed in summer clothing and a life jacket, was drifting approximately 500-yards off of the Monterey Bay Aquarium and was reported to be in the water for approximately 20 minutes.
Once on scene, the MLB crew retrieved the woman and transferred her to awaiting emergency medical services personnel who determined that there was no further medical treatment necessary.
“Cold water can rapidly impact a person in the water’s ability to self rescue,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Gustavo Rivera-Gonzalez. “In this case, the kayaker was fortunate to be wearing a life jacket and that help was close by.”
