CLEVELAND — The Coast Guard rescued four people from Lake Michigan during two separate cases, Friday evening.
Just before 7 p.m., watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan were notified of a capsized sail boat with two people in the water near Kenosha, Wisconsin.
A rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Kenosha aboard a 25-foot response boat launched to assist, as well as an aircrew from Coast Guard Air Facility Waukegan, Illinois, aboard a Dolphin helicopter.
The boat crew arrived on-scene and rescued one of the two people. The second person swam approximately 100 yards to shore.
Emergency medical services evaluated both boaters when they reached shore and treated one for mild hypothermia.
It is unknown if the people were wearing life jackets.
There have been no reports of any pollution, the sail boat has since washed ashore and it’s owner is coordinating plans for salvage.
Just after 7:30 p.m., Secor Lake Michigan watchstanders overheard a mayday broadcast, on VHF-FM channel 16, from boaters on a 23-foot pleasure craft taking on water with three people aboard in Lake Michigan near Two Rivers, Wisconsin.
A boat crew from Coast Guard Station Two Rivers launched aboard a 25-foot response boat. Upon arriving on-scene, two boat crew members carried a dewatering pump aboard the distressed boat.
After successfully dewatering the distressed boat, the response boat crew escorted the vessel to the Sea Gull Marina in Two Rivers, where it was removed from the water.
The cause of the flooding is unknown and all three people were wearing life jackets.
The Coast Guard reminds boaters that wearing a life jacket can save your life. Accidents happen quickly, so take the time to put one on before you leave the dock. It is also important to have an effective means of communication while you are on the water. The Coast Guard recommends using a VHF-FM radio as it is the most efficient means of calling for help should you need it.
