Coast Guard rescues 4 after vessel sinks

NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard rescued four people from a barge near the Chandeleur Islands early this morning.

Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans received the call for assistance from Coast Guard Sector New Orleans at 11:35 p.m. Thursday, reporting a tug boat taking on water with people on board. The men abandoned the tug just prior to it sinking for the safety of the barge they were towing.

Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans launched an HH-65C Dolphin helicopter crew to rescue the people. The helicopter crew arrived on scene, hoisted all four personnel and transported them safely to Air Station New Orleans. No medical attention was needed.
