Coast Guard rescues 3 in Cape May channel

CAPE MAY, N.J. – The Coast Guard rescued three people today who were disoriented while aboard a 38-foot fishing boat in Cape May Channel in the fog.

The Coast Guard received a call at approximately 2 a.m. from a crewmember aboard the fishing boat, reporting they were in thick fog, did not know where they were and were going to drop their anchor.

A rescue boat crew from U.S. Coast Guard Station Cape May arrived on scene and towed the fishing boat to safe harbor.

“The captain did the smartest thing,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Jared Meloro, a member of Coast Guard Station Cape May. ” Instead of keeping the propulsion, he dropped the hook and called for help.”
