Coast Guard rescues 3 from capsized vessel

MILWAUKEE – The Coast Guard rescued three people from a capsized vessel approximately 1 mile off Bradford Beach at 5:15 a.m. today.

The 16-foot vessel capsized when two passengers that were swimming climbed on board at the same time the boat was hit by a wave.

Two people wearing life jackets swam to shore to get help. The remaining three passengers clung to the hull of the overturned vessel unable to access their life jackets that were inside the vessel.

A 41-foot utility boat from Station Milwaukee rescued the three people from the vessel and brought them to awaiting Emergency Medical Services onshore. The three people were treated for hypothermia.

Boaters are required to have life jackets for every occupant onboard, and those life jackets need to be readily accessible.
