CLEVELAND — The Coast Guard rescued three people from the Maumee River after their boats were taking on water early Wednesday evening.
Just after 7 p.m., a search-and-rescue controller at Coast Guard Sector Detroit received notification that a 14-foot rowing crewboat with two people aboard was taking on water in the Maumee River in the vicinity of Toledo, Ohio.
The crew team’s coach, aboard his jon boat nearby, assisted the two rowers. Once both rowers were aboard the coach’s jon boat, it, too began taking on water.
A rescue boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Toledo launched aboard a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium and found the jon boat that was taking on water.
The rescue boatcrew brought all three people aboard the RB-M, placed the 14-foot crewboat onboard, and placed the jon boat in side tow. The boaters and their boats were transferred to Promenade Park in Toledo.
The cause of the boats taking on water is unknown at this time.
The Coast Guard reminds boaters to always be aware of their surroundings and help other boaters in need of assistance whenever possible, without putting themselves in a precarious position.
