NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard rescued two people from a grounded vessel in Venice, Louisiana, Friday.
Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report, at 4:20 p.m. Thursday of a grounded vessel in the marshes of Tiger Pass with two people aboard.
Sector watchstanders directed the launch of a 24-Foot Special Purpose Craft-Shallow Water boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Venice to assist the people.
The boatcrew located the vessel in low visibility at 7:57 p.m. by using sound signals.
The Coast Guard vessel was unable to reach the disabled vessel, so a boatcrew member, while wearing a life jacket and attached to the Coast Guard small boat with two heaving lines, walked to the vessel and escorted the two people safely back to the Coast Guard small boat.
The boatcrew transported the two people to Station Venice in stable condition.
“The Coast Guard urges mariners to maintain awareness during heavy fog, check weather forecasts frequently and bring multiple forms of communication onboard their vessels prior to heading out onto the water,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Bruce Reed, a command duty officer at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans.
