KEY WEST, Fla. — A Coast Guard boatcrew from Station Islamorada, Fla., rescued two people after their 17-foot Mako boat started taking on water near Hens and Chickens reef, approximately two miles southwest of Islamorada.
Coast Guard Station Islamorada crewmembers received a cell phone call from the distressed boaters at approximately 3:30 p.m. Monday. The two, Ben David Lee, 26, of Tavernier, Fla., and Shadyra Yelizaveta, a 26-year-old female, reported they were taking on water and needed help.
The Coast Guard immediately responded by launching a boatcrew from Station Islamorada who arrived on scene at approximately 3:38 p.m. and brought Lee and Yelizaveta aboard the Coast Guard boat.
The Coast Guard rescue boatcrew returned to Station Islamorada with the two boaters who contacted Tow Boat U.S. to salvage their boat.
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission also arrived on scene and remained with the boat until Tow Boat U.S. arrived to salvage the boat.
