Coast Guard rescues 2 fishermen from capsized boat off Vieques, Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Reef Shark and a Puerto Rico Police Joint Forces for Rapid Action (FURA) helicopter combined efforts to rescue two fishermen Thursday, after their 20-foot fishing vessel capsized, approximately one nautical mile south southeast of Vieques, Puerto Rico.

Rescued were Juan Feliciano, 44, and Juan Carlos Gorritz Dávila, 56, residents of Toa Baja, Puerto Rico, who reportedly had departed from the Las Croabas boat ramp in Fajardo Thursday on a fishing trip to Vieques. The fishermen reported that their their fishing line got tangled in engine’s propeller and in the process of untangling the line the swells caused the vessel to capsize.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector San Juan were notified of the incident by a 911 operator, who relayed a cell phone communication from one of the fishermen who was able to report the distress.

Coast Guard Watchstanders diverted the Coast Guard Cutter Reef Shark to search of the fishermen. The Reef Shark arrived on scene and launched their cutter small boat that was vectored to the location of the capsizing by the crew of Puerto Rico Police FURA helicopter. The crew of the Reef Shark cutter small boat safely recovered both fishermen from the water and transferred them to a Puerto Rico Police FURA marine unit that also responded.
