Coast Guard rescues 2 after sailboat capsizes in Albemarle Sound, NC

5th Coast Guard District NewsPLYMOUTH, N.C. — The Coast Guard rescued a man and woman Tuesday morning, after the 12-foot sailboat they were aboard capsized in the Albemarle Sound.

Coast Guard received notification at 8:08 p.m., Monday from the couple’s neighbor via Washington County Dispatch personnel, reporting that the two boaters had left at approximately 4 p.m., but had not returned before thunderstorms had encompassed the area.

A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., located the couple in the middle of the sound at approximately 1:54 a.m.

The woman was hoisted from the water by the aircrew while a rescue boat crew from Station Elizabeth City, who were also involved in the search, arrived on scene and assisted the man in righting the sailboat before towing him to the Midway Boat Ramp.

The woman was taken to Air Station Elizabeth City with no medical concerns.

Also involved in the search were Coast Guard Auxiliary personnel from Plymouth, N.C., and North Carolina Wildlife.
