Coast Guard rescues 2 after night in the gulf

HOUSTON – The Coast Guard rescued two people from a grounded boat west of the I-45 Causeway Bridge in Galveston Bay, Texas, today.

A watchstander at Coast Guard Sector Houston/Galveston received a call for assistance from the Galveston Police Department at 2:34 a.m., reporting a grounded boat with a 58-year-old man and 40-year-old woman on board. The man stated he was diabetic and had a heart condition and wanted to get off the boat. The boat was near South Deer Island and the water was too shallow for any rescue boats to get close.

Coast Guard Air Station Houston launched an HH-65C Dolphin helicopter crew to rescue the people. The helicopter crew arrived on scene, hoisted both people and transported them to the University of Texas Medical Branch, in Galveston.
