Coast Guard Rescues 149 Haitians, 50 More Awaiting Transfer

MIAMI – The Coast Guard Cutter Resolute is currently on scene with a 40 to 50-foot Haitian sail freighter that was carrying approximately 200 illegal migrants 13 miles west of Great Inagua, Bahamas.

The severely overloaded vessel was spotted in 6 to 8-foot seas just before 10 a.m by the crew of the Resolute.

The crew of the Resolute immediately launched their small boat and provided life jackets to the migrants on board the dilapidated vessel and began transferring them to the Resolute.

Currently 149 Haitian migrants have been transferred to Resolute and approximately 50 remain on board the vessel, awaiting transfer.

Once on board Coast Guard cutters, all migrants receive food, water and any necessary medical attention.

The Cutter Resolute is a 210-foot medium endurance cutter home-ported in St. Petersburg, Fla.
