Coast Guard rescuers respond to capsized sailboat off North Carolina coast

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Coast Guard rescuers are responding to a capsized sailboat 102 miles southeast of Cape Lookout this evening.

Watch standers at Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads were notified by the cruise ship GRANDEUR OF THE SEAS at 11:20 a.m. that their crew had spotted a capsized off the Atlantic coast.

Sector Hampton Roads relayed this information to personnel at the Coast Guard Rescue Coordination Center (RCC) Portsmouth who launched a Coast Guard C-130J aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., to investigate.

Upon arriving the aircrew spotted a debris field and a covered life raft, after several low flybys of the raft the aircrew reported seeing a person onboard and notified the watch standers at RCC Portsmouth.

A MH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter crew from Elizabeth City has been dispatched to hoist the person from the raft.
