Coast Guard rescue crews medically evacuate 50-year-old man from cruise ship near Nantucket

1st Coast Guard District NewsBOSTON — A 50-year-old man  was medically evacuated from the cruise ship Norwegian Dawn by a Coast Guard helicopter rescue crew 160 nautical miles south of Nantucket, Mass., Wednesday night.

The Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod crew successfully hoisted the man into their MH-60 Jayhawk Helicopter and transported him to Hyannis Airport.

Local EMS further transported the man to Cape Cod Hospital.

“It has been a busy night but we got him on the helicopter safely and on his way for medical treatment,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael Heximer, the aviation survival technician aboard the helicopter.

The man was believed to be suffering from a ruptured spleen due to a kayak accident two days ago while on a port call in Bermuda.
