Coast Guard Repatriates 78 Haitians, 53 Cubans

MIAMI РThe crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Forward repatriated 78 Haitian migrants to Cape Haitien, Haiti., and the Coast Guard Cutter Key Biscayne repatriated 53 Cuban migrants to Bahia de Caba̱as, Cuba today.

On April 5, the Cutter Decisive interdicted 10 Cuban migrants on board a rustic vessel 65 miles south of Key West, Fla. At the request of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service, five of the migrants will be transported to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Also on April 5, the Cutter Decisive interdicted an additional five Cuban migrants from a vessel 11 miles south of Marquesas, Fla.

Two more interdiction’s were made by Coast Guard personnel on April 7. The Cutter Decisive interdicted 20 Cuban migrants from a suspected go-fast vessel 30 miles south of Cabo San Antonio, Cuba, and the Cutter Forward interdicted 78 Haitian migrants on board a 37-foot sailing vessel bound for Miami.

On April 8, the Cutter Decisive interdicted 23 migrants from a suspected go-fast vessel 47 miles south of Key West.

Since January, the Coast Guard has repatriated 166 Haitians and 612 Cuban migrants who were caught attempting to enter the United Stated illegally.

“The U.S. Coast Guard and its partners in border security continue to maintain a robust presence in the air and on the sea where we can best counter trans-national threats,” said Lt. Cmdr. Chris O’Neil, public affairs officer for the Seventh Coast Guard District. “We will continue to aggressively patrol to interdict undocumented migrants at sea, to halt migrant smuggling and to rescue migrants from unseaworthy or grossly overloaded vessels as well as the other perils that often befall them on these ill-advised and inherently dangerous journeys.”

Once on board Coast Guard cutters, all migrants receive food, water, and any necessary medical treatment.

The Forward is a 270-foot medium endurance cutter homeported in Portsmouth, Va.

The Cutter Decisive is a 210-foot medium endurance cutter homeported in Pascagoula, Miss.

The Key Biscayne is a 110-foot patrol boat homeported in St. Petersburg, Fla.
