MIAMI – Crewmembers from the Coast Guard Cutter Seneca returned 61 Haitian migrants, including two children and an infant, to Cap Haitien, Haiti, Thursday, after rescuing them from their overloaded vessel in the waters northwest of Pointe Ouest, Ile de la Tortue, Haiti.
While conducting routine patrols in the Windward Passage Tuesday, a Seneca crewmember spotted the overloaded sail freighter. Seneca crewmembers safely embarked the 61 migrants and provided food, water, shelter and basic medical care to the migrants.
Since Jan.1, Coast Guard crews have interdicted a total of 357 Haitian migrants.
Seneca is a 270-foot medium endurance cutter homeported in Boston.
