Coast Guard Repatriates 50 Cuban Migrants

MIAMI – The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Drummond repatriated 50 Cuban migrants to Bahia de Cabanas, Cuba, Tuesday.

The 50 migrants were stopped in five separate incidents.

The largest group of the five groups interdicted over the last week, was 20 people who were spotted in a rustic vessel 53 miles southwest of Key West, Fla., Wednesday by the Coast Guard Cutter Pelican.

The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Shamal spotted a rustic vessel with 13 migrants aboard 35 miles northeast of Havana, Cuba, Friday.

The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Pelican spotted a rustic vessel with five migrants aboard 35 miles north of Havana, Friday.

The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Decisive spotted a rustic vessel with eight migrants aboard 68 miles south of Key West, Fla., Friday.

The crew of a Coast Guard C-130 from Air Station Clearwater, Fla., spotted a rustic vessel with five people aboard and relayed their position to the Coast Guard Cutter Knight Island. The crew of the Knight Island responded and interdicted the migrants 43 miles south of the Dry Tortugas, Fla.

In addition to the interdictions that took place, there was one interruption of a suspected smuggling operation.

A Coast Guard HU-25 Falcon jet from Air Station Miami spotted a vessel during a routine law enforcement patrol Saturday, south of Everglade City, Fla.

The crew from a Coast Guard 33-foot special purpose craft from Station Key West boarded the vessel, terminated the voyage and transferred the two men aboard the vessel to Customs and Border Protection officials.

Once aboard Coast Guard vessels, all migrants receive food, water and any necessary medical attention.
