Coast Guard repatriates 45 Haitian migrants

MIAMI – The Coast Guard Cutter Tampa repatriated 45 Haitian migrants to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Wednesday after they were interdicted at sea Monday.

An HU-25 Falcon jet crew from Coast Guard Air Station Miami located a 33-foot cuddy-cabin vessel about 70-miles southeast of the Turks and Caicos. The air crew noticed several people aboard the vessel waving their arms to attract attention. The cutter Tampa was diverted to render assistance.

After arriving on scene, the crew of the Tampa distributed personal floatation devices to each person and safely transferred them to the cutter.

Once aboard the cutter, all migrants received food, water, shelter and necessary medical attention.

Since Oct. 1, 2008, Coast Guard crews have interdicted 1,304 Haitian migrants.
