Coast Guard Repatriates 218 Haitian Migrants

MIAMI – The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Bear repatriated 218 Haitian migrants from three separate interdictions at sea within the past five days to Cap Haitien, Haiti, Monday.

  • Bear crewmembers interdicted a 50-foot Haitian sail freighter with 84 Haitian migrants between Great Inagua, Bahamas, and Punta Maisi, Cuba, Wednesday.
  • Bear crewmembers interdicted a 40-foot Haitian sail freighter approximately 20 miles west of Haiti with 69 Haitian migrants aboard, Friday.
  • Bear crewmembers interdicted a 25-foot Haitian go-fast vessel 33 miles north of Cap Haitien with 65 Haitian migrants aboard, Sunday.

The crew from the Bear safely embarked all the migrants from their grossly overloaded vessels.

Migrants receive food, water, shelter and basic medical care while aboard Coast Guard cutters.

Bear is a 270-foot medium endurance cutter homeported in Portsmouth, Va.
