MIAMI – The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Chandeleur has repatriated 16 Cuban migrants to Bahia de Cabanas, Cuba today.
The crew of the patrol vessel, Peter Gladding, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration vessel, spotted a makeshift vessel December 3 with 14 male migrants on board 12 miles southwest of Marquesas, Fla. They passed the information to the Coast Guard and the crew of the Chandeleur transferred the 12 on board the cutter.
A Coast Guard helicopter spotted a raft with four migrants December 4 about 22 miles south of Rebecca Shoals, Fla. The crew of the Chandeleur transferred the four Cuban migrants on board the cutter. At the request of U.S. Citizen and Immigration Service, two of the four migrants will be taken to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba for further disposition.
Once on board Coast Guard cutters, all migrants receive food, water and any necessary medical attention.
The cutter Chandeleur is a 110-foot patrol boat homeported in Miami, Fla.
