Coast Guard reopens portion of Mississippi River after bridge allision

Coast Guard Sector Ohio Valley LogoTHEBES, Ill. – The Coast Guard reopened a portion of the Mississippi River, Thursday, after an uninspected towing vessel allided with a bridge.

The Coast Guard reopened the Mississippi River at 5:54 p.m., from mile marker 43, near Thebes, to mile marker 0, near Cairo.

Watchstanders with Coast Guard Sector Ohio Valley received a report at 10:04 p.m., Wednesday, that the uninspected towing vessel, Jay Luhr, allided with the Thebes Railroad Bridge, causing the vessel’s tow of 25 loaded rock barges to break loose.

All barges have been accounted for.

The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the incident.
