Coast Guard reopens Ohio River to limited traffic

LOUISVILLE, Ky.  (D8 Public Affairs) – The Coast Guard reopened a section of the Ohio River this afternoon with restrictions to vessel traffic from mile marker 847.5 to 849 near Old Shawneetown, Ill.

Towing vessels are only allowed to pass through the restricted area during daylight hours and north bound vessels are restricted to a maximum of four barges and south bound vessels are to be empty.

Shoaling caused by runoff of the Wabash River forced an Ohio River closure earlier today.

The Coast Guard is working along with the Army Corps of Engineers and industry partners to open the navigation channel without restrictions and to ensure the continued safe navigation of all vessels through the area.
