SAN FRANCISCO – The Coast Guard removed the pollution threat yesterday from a vessel that grounded on the rocks near the surf break at Maverick’s outside of Pillar Point early Saturday morning.
There was one person aboard the 45-foot fishing vessel Fjord Queen II when it ran aground at 3:10 a.m.
The Coast Guard launched a 47-foot Motor Lifeboat from Station Golden Gate, the Cutter Tern, an 87-foot patrol boat homeported at Yerba Buena Island, and a helicopter from Air Station San Francisco. Additionally, the San Mateo County Sheriff and the Coast Guard Auxiliary also responded. The operator ultimately abandoned the vessel and was rescued from the water by the Pillar Point Harbor Master.
The Coast Guard led pollution response operations that included representatives from the California Department of Fish and Game Office of Oil Spill Prevention and Response and the San Mateo County Park Rangers. Approximately 240 gallons of diesel were removed from the vessel by Parker Diving Service. The vessel currently remains aground.
