Coast Guard recovers two from Newport vessel in distress

SEATTLE – The Coast Guard, working with local authorities, responded to a 19-foot recreational vessel in distress with two people on board in Newport, Ore., at approximately 1:00 p.m. Tuesday.

A beach crew and tethered Coast Guard rescue swimmer located and recovered one unresponsive person from the surf line shortly after arriving on scene.

The second crewman was located by an HH-65C Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Group/Air Station North Bend, Ore., and was also found to be unresponsive after being recovered by the beach crew and tethered rescue swimmer.

Both crewmen were transferred to Samaritan Pacific Community Hospital in Newport and their condition is unknown at this time.

Names are not being released by the Coast Guard pending notification of the next of kin.
