HOUSTON – The Coast Guard recovered two people and continues to search for a missing child near Galveston Island Sunday.

The family reported that two 9-year old twins had been swimming when the current swept them away. The father attempted to rescue the twins but was swept away as well.

Coast Guard Air Station Houston diverted an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter and rescue crew and Coast Guard Station Galveston launched a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium. Once on-scene the Coast Guard located the father and one child unresponsive and transported them to EMS.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to all of the family members. This case is a reminder that currents are unpredictable and children and weak swimmers should always wear a life jacket even when they are wading in water,” said Petty Officer First Brooke Milstead, an operations specialist at Sector Houston-Galveston.
