Coast Guard Recovers Man from Capsized Boat

CLEVELAND – The U.S. Coast Guard assisted a man after his boat capsized near the 72nd Street Marina, here, Tuesday.

Jeremy McGrew was fishing when a wave struck his boat and capsized it. His 14-foot boat that was loaded down with gear, which made it more susceptible to minor waves.

McGrew was able to swim to a nearby break wall and shoot off several flares, which successfully alerted the Coast Guard at 11:12 p.m.

At 11:45 p.m., a 25-foot response boat from Station Cleveland Harbor arrived on scene and transferred the man and his boat from the break wall back to the 72nd Street Marina.

The water temperature was 52 degrees and had McGrew been out for much longer he could have been at risk for hypothermia.

McGrew’s flares played an integral part in his recovery. All boaters should have audible and visual signaling devices on board their vessels.
