Coast Guard recovers kayak, search to continue through night

PORTLAND, Maine – The Coast Guard will continue searching throughout the night for kayaker Hamilton Wood, who has been missing since Friday afternoon.

The Coast Guard Cutter Reliance is scheduled to remain on scene throughout the night.

Earlier today a 47-foot rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Portsmouth Harbor recovered Wood’s kayak in the vicinity of Boon Island, Maine.

“Because Mr. Wood’s kayak was found within the established search area, we feel confident that we have are searching the right area,” said Capt. Jim McPherson, commander of Sector Northern New England.

More than 200 people from the Coast Guard and state and local agencies have been involved in the search for Wood since Friday.

“I’m proud of all the people who have helped in the search for Mr. Wood,” said McPherson. “All of the crews have done a great job throughout the search. A boat crew from Station Portsmouth Harbor remained on scene in freezing temperatures last night and the Reliance will remain out tonight.”
