Coast Guard recovers body near Nueces Bay, Texas

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Coast Guard recovered the body of a 51 year-old man from Corpus Christi who had gone missing in Nueces Bay, Texas just west of the highway 181 causeway, early this morning.

Jonathan Bridges and two friends were fishing when their boat experienced engine trouble. The men called a friend for assistance. Once their friend arrived on scene a tow line was rigged. As the tow line went taunt Bridges boat jerked and he fell overboard.

The two boats took five to ten minutes to get back to the location of where Bridges had fallen overboard. There was no sign of him, so they called 911.

A watchstander from Sector Corpus Christi received a call from the Corpus Christi Police Office Department at 1:25 a.m. requesting assistance in the search for Bridges who fell overboard from his 18-foot fishing boat.

Sector Corpus Christi immediately launched a rescue helicopter crew from Air Station Corpus Christi and a rescue boat crew from Station Port Aransas to assist. Already searching were the Corpus Christi fire and police departments.

The Coast Guard helicopter crew spotted the body and directed the Coast Guard rescue boat to his location. The crew recovered the body at 10:57 a.m., transported it to the Corpus Christi Marina, where the Nueces County Medical Examiner pronounced him deceased.

Bridges was not wearing a life jacket and could not swim.
