KEY WEST, Fla. — The Coast Guard seized a bale of cocaine floating in the water southeast of the Marquesas Keys Saturday.
Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Key West received a radio transmission from a good Samaritan reporting a suspicious package floating in the water.
Coast Guard watchstanders at Sector Key West launched a Coast Guard Station Key West boatcrew to respond. The crew rendezvoused with the good Samaritan and retrieved the bale from the water.
“We are grateful for the good Samaritan’s reporting the suspicious package,” said Capt. Pat DeQuattro, commander, Sector Key West. “As a result, these drugs will not plague our communities.”
The contraband was ultimately transferred to Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations agents for further investigation.
