CLEVELAND — Coast Guard crews pursued and assisted in the apprehension of a boater who is suspected of felony evading of a law enforcement officer Monday night on Lake Erie.

At about 9:15 p.m., a Coast Guard Station Marblehead, Ohio, boatcrew aboard a 47-foot Motor Life Boat reported to the Coast Guard Sector Detroit command center that, while they were conducting hoist training with an aircrew aboard an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Detroit, they witnessed a 30-foot high performance vessel cross within 100 yards of the MLB’s bow at a high rate of speed with no navigation lights on.

Sector Detroit diverted the MLB and helicopter crews from training to pursue the vessel. A second Station Marblehead boatcrew aboard a 33-foot Special Purpose Craft-Law Enforcement was launched to assist.

The vessel operator failed to stop, even after the MLB crew energized its law enforcement lights.

The helicopter crew followed the vessel to the Willow Cove Marina in Sandusky, Ohio, where the vessel moored.

Sector Detroit contacted the Sandusky Police Department and Customs and Border Protection who dispatched officers as well.

Once on scene, the Sandusky PD charged the operator with felony evading a law enforcement officer and took him into custody.
