ABC12.com: Coast Guard practices ice rescues
MID MICHIGAN (WJRT) – (01/24/07)–It is the time of year to enjoy the outdoors, but it can also be a dangerous time as people venture onto the ice.
Mid Michigan has seen that first hand this month with the drowning death of a 6-year-old boy in Iosco County and the rescue just last week of three people on Wigwam Bay.
Now the Coast Guard is spending time in Mid Michigan to train for such scenarios.
The Coast Guard will train 72 members over the next three weeks. They chose Mid Michigan because it’s one of the best areas to train in.
It’s considered the Top Gun of the Coast Guard: members training their peers to execute ice-rescue missions.
