Coast Guard, partners search for 64-year-old man near Prince of Wales, Alaska

ChandeleurJUNEAU, Alaska— A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter aircrew, Alaska State Troopers, the Forest Service and two good Samaritans are searching for a 64-year-old man near Camp Island near Prince of Wales.

Coast Guard Sector Juneau watchstanders received a request for assistance from ASTs on Friday after the man’s skiff was found washed ashore on northern Heceta Island. The missing individual departed Naukati on Wednesday intending to camp on Camp Island for one night. The crew of Coast Guard Cutter Chandeleur and the helicopter crew were dispatched after a search of the island by AST’s was unsuccessful.

“The Coast Guard and its partners are working together to find this man,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Georgette Lopez, a Sector Juneau watchstander. “We appreciate the assistance of the good Samaritans in our search efforts, and anyone with information that may assist with the search is encouraged to call the Sector Juneau command center at 907-463-2980.”

Weather on scene is reported as 3-foot seas and 17-mph winds.
