Coast Guard, partner agencies searching for missing hiker near Akhiok, Alaska

JUNEAU, Alaska — A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew, the Alaska State Troopers and local authorities are searching for a missing hiker near Akhiok Sunday.

The man’s all-terrain vehicle was found on the south side of Kodiak Island by the Akhiok village public safety officer and rescue teams are now searching for him.

Coast Guard Sector Anchorage command center watchstanders directed the launch of the helicopter crew at approximately 8:30 a.m., after the Alaska State Troopers requested assistance with the search.

“Our top priority is to locate the missing hiker,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Michael McCandless, a Sector Anchorage command duty officer. “We are working closely with the Alaska State Troopers and our local partners to search the area near the man’s last known location.”

Weather on scene was reported as winds ranging from 15 to 40 mph and temperature at 45 degrees.
