Coast Guard, partner agencies respond to ferry collision with kayakers

25 New YorkNEW YORK — Coast Guard and partner agency crews responded to a collision between a New York Waterways ferry and 11 kayakers on the Hudson River Tuesday afternoon.

At approximately 5:50 p.m., watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New York received a call from the master aboard the ferry Jersey City, reporting a collision between the ferry and 11 kayakers near Pier 79 in Manhattan.

A Coast Guard Station New York smallboat crew was launched and arrived on scene to assist New York Police Department, New York Fire Department and Jersey City Fire Department officials with rescuing 11 kayakers from the water.

All 11 kayakers were safely transported to awaiting EMS crews for medical attention. Five kayakers were transported to Bellevue Hospital and Mount Sinai Roosevelt Hospital for additional medical attention. Two kayakers were listed in critical condition as a result of the collision.

The cause of the collision is currently under investigation.
