HOUSTON — The Coast Guard oversaw lightering operations of 18,000 barrels of oil after a tow vessel and two barges in tow ran aground while transiting near the entrance to Dickinson Bayou, Wednesday.

The barges, Buffalo 802 and 803, ran aground at 6:45 p.m. after breaking away from the towing vessel, Captain Hard, in inclement weather. The barges were carrying approximately 45,000 barrels of oil when they ran aground.

The Captain Hard and both barges were refloated Thursday, then transited to Pelican Island to have their original product reloaded. They were then able to continue their originally scheduled trip to Port Arthur later that evening. The lightering was conducted without incident.
