Coast Guard on the lookout for two overdue boaters near Dry Tortugas, Fla.

MIAMI — Coast Guard crews are trying to determine the whereabouts of two overdue boaters, Thursday, who reportedly did not arrive in Dry Tortugas, Florida, as scheduled.

Thomas Rota, a 40-year-old male and Megan Rota, a 37-year-old female, residents from Mexico, departed from Isla Mujeres, Mexico, in a 63-foot white catamaran sailing vessel named Chelone on June 9, 2014 and were due to arrive in Dry Tortugas on Friday.

A family member contacted watchstanders at the Coast Guard 7th District Command Center in Miami at approximately 6 p.m. Tuesday to report that the two boaters were due to arrive in Dry Tortugas for a brief stop on Friday. They were scheduled to continue to Key West, Florida, and arrive on Monday.

The reporting source stated she had not heard from the two boaters since June 9.

The Coast Guard responded by issuing an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast and requested the assistance of nearby mariners to keep a sharp lookout for the missing boaters.

A C-130 aircraft crew from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, Florida, was launched to search the area.
