Coast Guard offloads approximately $500,000 worth of marijuana

MIAMI — Coast Guard Cutter Venturous offloaded 550 pounds of marijuana and transferred eight suspected drug smugglers to Homeland Security Investigations in Key West, Fla., Monday.

A Coast Guard aircraft notified the Coast Guard Cutter Bear of a suspicious vessel detected in the vicinity of Isla de Tortue, Haiti, Dec. 27, 2012.

Once the Bear’s two small boats were on scene, the crew aboard the sailing vessel turned on the navigation lights, jettisoned the packages and attempted to flee law enforcement.

After pursuit, the Coast Guard gained control of the vessel and apprehended the crew.

The packages were recovered from the water and later tested positive for THC.

The suspected drug smugglers and the contraband were transferred to the Venturous for offload in Key West.

The Coast Guard Cutter Bear is a 270-foot medium endurance cutter, homeported in Portsmouth, Va.

The Coast Guard Cutter Venturous is a 210-foot medium endurance cutter, homeported in St. Petersburg, Fla.
