Chesapeake, VA –Lt. Cmdr. Richard Gay, the Executive Officer of Communications Area Master Station Atlantic (CAMSLANT), found himself suddenly bald yesterday as a part of a challenge to his command to donate $4,000 to the unit’s Combined Federal Campaign (CFC).
Gay promised he would shave his head if the command raised the money for the CFC, an organization that works with government agencies to collect voluntary annual donations for both local and national non-profit organizations. In response to the challenge, the 152 personnel stationed at CAMSLANT donated a total of $8,017 to CFC.
Petty Officer 3rd Class Reginald Fletcher won the honor of cutting Gay’s hair though a raffle benefitting the unit’s morale fund, which has been used to help Coast Guard personnel and their families in times of need. Before Petty Officer Fletcher started clipping, though, Charles Walker, a civilian contractor at CAMSLANT, offered to donate $200 more to the morale fund if Gay would agree to have just the top of his head shaved to match that of the CAMSLANT’s Commanding Officer, Cmdr. Steven Godfrey, who is partially bald. Gay agreed.
Following the haircut, Godfrey conducted another raffle for the morale fund for the privilege of applying aftershave to Gay’s head. Petty Officer 2nd Class Justin Courie was winner, smiling at the reaction of his supervisor when the alcohol-based fragrance came in contact with his newly shorn scalp.
