Coast Guard Offers Free EPIRB Testing at Little Norway Festival

JUNEAU, AK – Coast Guard representatives will test Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs) for both commercial and recreational boaters during the Little Norway Festival in Petersburg on May 18, 19 and 20. Owners of 406 MHz EPIRBs can bring their EPIRBs to the Coast Guard booth at the festival on a first-come, first-served basis. The Coast Guard will set off each EPIRB inside a lead box and use a special monitoring device to ensure that the EPIRB is broadcasting properly.

EPIRBs facilitate rescues at sea by sending signals to satellites to aid the Coast Guard in locating vessels in distress. More information about EPIRB technology is available at the Coast Guard’s Navigation Center.
