ALAMEDA, Calif. – Vice Adm. Paul F. Zukunft, commander of Coast Guard Pacific Area presided over a ceremony recognizing the partnership between Bay Area Coast Guard units and the Oakland Military Institute, which was developed under the Coast Guard Partnership in Education program.

This award, presented annually on behalf of the Commandant of the Coast Guard, Adm. Robert J. Papp, Jr., recognizes Coast Guard units and local schools who have developed a strong relationship of mentoring, education and positive interaction.

“We are so privileged to have this partnership with the Oakland Military Institute,” said Zukunft.  “These are remarkable students with bright futures and we are honored to have the opportunity to help mentor and guide them as they become leaders in both academics and character.”

One hundred forty nine Coast Guard personnel volunteered more than 1300 hours to this program during 2012.  More than 20 events were held, including one-on-one mentoring, athletics events at Coast Guard facilities, and leadership training among others.

During 2012, two OMI students who participated in the program were accepted to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.

California Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr. also spoke at the event.
