NORFOLK, Va. – Coast Guard crews along with Norfolk Fire Rescue and Virginia Beach Fire Department responded to a marina fire at the Vinings Landing Marina in Norfolk early Wednesday morning.
At approximately 1:36 a.m., Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads watchstanders were notified of a fire at the marina on Shore Drive in Norfolk.
A 45-foot sailing vessel caught fire and spread to adjacent recreational boats. Three of the boats damaged by the fire sank at their slips. At least three other vessels sustained damage. Norfolk Fire Rescue and a Virginia Beach Fire Department boat crew responded on scene and extinguished the fire. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
A Coast Guard pollution investigator along with responders on scene have deployed absorbent pads and boom to control the spread of fuel from the damaged boats.
“Over 35 first responders safely executed a well coordinated response to mitigate the spread of the fire and the threat of pollution. There is no immediate threat to the public; however, we recommend that boaters exercise caution when operating in vicinity of the marina.” said Ens. David Herndon, Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads pollution investigator.
Norfolk Fire Rescue and Coast Guard personnel remain on scene to monitor the situation.
