Coast Guard Names Leadership Award Winner

Washington – The Coast Guard announced today that Chief Damage Controlman (DCC) Steven Simpson has been selected as this years winner of the MCPO Angela M. McShan Inspirational Leadership Award.  The prestigious award recognizes a Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer, either active or reserve, who best exemplifies the Coast Guard core values of Honor, Respect and Devotion to Duty.

DCC Simpson is the Enlisted Professional Military Education Subject Matter Specialist (EMPE SMS) at Coast Guard Training Center Petaluma, CA.   Utilizing exceptional leadership skills, Chief Simpson leveraged the Coast Guard training system to make notable improvements, including the development of a newe EPME website and graphics that enhanced user interface and improved the ability of members to prepare for service wide exams.

Chief Simpson conducted training for over 1,000 in EPME, advancement and individual development.  Due to his leadership skills and high personal integrity, he was selected to manage the Petty Officer Indoctrination Program, impacting 3,400 A School students a year.  His actions led to a 78 percent decrease in disturbances in the barracks, a 55 percent reduction in serious disciplinary cases, and a 46 percent decrease in student attrition.

Chief Simpson will be recognized at an awards ceremony at Coast Guard Headquarters.
