Texas City, TX – Marine Safety Unit Galveston will officially transition to become Marine Safety Unit Texas City in a ceremony scheduled to be held Monday afternoon. During the ceremony, Adm. Mary Landry, Eighth Coast Guard District commander, the Honorable Matthew Doyle, mayor of Texas City, and Cmdr. James Elliott, commanding officer at Marine Safety Unit Galveston, will offer remarks.
“With the expansion of the Coast Guard’s marine safety mission, by 2007, the crew’s size had clearly exceeded the capacity of the existing leased space on Galveston Island,” said Cmdr. James Elliott, commanding officer of Marine Safety Unit Galveston.
“With the command’s large area of responsibility, finding a location relatively equidistant from the ports of Galveston, Texas City and Freeport to improve response times, with close proximity to a helicopter base to conduct daily offshore operations, was vital to mission execution and enhancing relationships with our port stakeholders,” said Cmdr. Elliott.
