Coast Guard monitors grounded sailing vessel near Kaneohe Bay

HONOLULU — U.S. Coast Guard crews are monitoring a vessel that ran aground 700 feet off of Kapapa’a Island Saturday at 10:30 p.m.

The Coast Guard received an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) signal late Saturday evening from the Cosmic California, a 40- to 50-foot white, double-masted sailing vessel with white sails. The sailing vessel is slightly drifting and taking on water, and there are no signs of anyone aboard.

An HH-65 rescue helicopter crew from Air Station Barbers Point is currently searching the area for anyone in distress.

Crewmembers from the air station and the Hawaii Fire Department searched the area Saturday night but found no signs of the vessel’s owner.

Anyone with further information about the grounded sailing vessel should immediately contact the Coast Guard at 808-535-3333.
